One year…

I can’t sleep.  I couldn’t sleep all night.  We had great groups of people visit us last night.  We had a marathon day of tests and meetings with doctors that I thought we would fall right into bed and zonk out for the rest of the night.  The last person of the night to stop in was Dr. Vander Woude (oncologist).  She was the doctor we were waiting to hear from for my prognosis.  She stepped around the questioning at first.  I said “do I have three days”?  She said “oh yes, you have three days.”  Then I said “is it months or a year?”  she said “probably a year”.  There it is.  There it was.  It was put out there.  Like a sucker punch in the gut that knocks all the wind out of you.  I have about a year to live.  I never thought I would say those words.  The radiation and any other procedures they do are to buy time.   

Just as we were going to bed, Dr. Hoberman called our room phone.  She spoke with Dr. Song (reconstructive plastic surgeon in Chicago) who happened to be on vacation, but was very happy to talk to her about me.  Dr. Hoberman is going to place some calls today to see what she can find out about alternative treatment at a bigger hospital or the Mayo Clinic.  Dr. VanderWoude is coming back in today (I’ts her weekend to work) and we are going to talk more about getting me to Mayo Clinic on Monday.  Does anyone have a private pilot’s license and feel like taking a trip to Mayo?  😉

Dusty and I are devastated.  We are beside ourselves upset with this news and don’t know how to process it.  I believe in the prayers that are being said.  We feel a peace at times that we know only could come from God. 

Please pray that we are led in the right direction for treatment.

Please pray that as Dusty and I look to the year ahead we will have two different outcomes so pray for him as he is the one left behind to be with our kids.  To raise them. Love them. Clothes them. Feed them.  Be a mom to them.

It breaks our hearts.

We need your help so if you know of alternative places such as mayo or chicago that do extensive/miraculous work with multiple brain tumors we would appreciate the information.

    I do not know what to say. I pray that God will give you peace and healing. In Isaiah 19:20 it tells us THey will turn to the Lord, and he will respond to their pleas and heal them. I love you guys.

    I have been following your blog for a while and am just heart broken with this news. I am praying for peace to surround you as you think of the year ahead. When I worked at the American Cancer Society, I referred a lot of patients to Wings of Mercy- they are a non-profit based out of Zeeland that flies patients to places like Mayo. I am not sure what the requirements are, but you might want to check it out.

    Even though I don’t know you personally I have been trying to come up with the perfect words to express to make it better, but I’ve come to the conclusion that there are no words… Know that my family and I will be praying for a miracle and a peace that passes all understanding.

    I have no idea who you are, but I was up several times during the night praying for you and your family. I don’t know what to say other than I know you are abundantly loved. I live in NYC, but I have lots of family in MI. Where exactly are you located?     Verbeek family, we have never met. I came across your blog through a friend’s. My heart is aching for your family. I will be praying for a miracle. We serve a mighty God who is able to move mountains! I also wanted to mention that you may look into Wings of Mercy for a medical flight. They provide FREE medical flights for families with limited income. If you do not qualify through them, there is also an agency out of Indiana that provides medical flights at discounted prices. Grace or Sharon of Wings of Mercy would be able to provide the name of that agency.

    I’ve come across your blog through several friends of mine who are friends with you. My devotional the other morning didn’t really strike a cord with me at all until I read your blog. It’s a little lengthy, but I wanted to share it and let you know that you have some bold prayer warriors in Colorado on their knees on your behalf!

    **After we pray and ask God for what we want, need or desire, we should wait expectantly. We must be full of hope, which is joyful and confident expectation of something good happening. After years of being disappointed in my childhood and early adult years, I developed what the Bible calls evil forebodings (see Proverbs 15:15). That means I was expecting bad news most of the time. I believe many good people are caught in the trap of being afraid to expect something good because the do not want to be disappointed again. God want everyone to aggressively expect good things from Him because He is good.
    Don’t be passive either. A passive person is someone who wants good things to happen and they are going to do nothing but wait to see what happens. Although the verse for today (Lamentations 3:25) does tell us to wait, it says to wait expectantly. I like to confess Scriptures aloud while I am waiting on God to work in my behalf. They remind me of His promises, and they keep me encouraged. God’s Word is filled with creative power and, when spoken in faith, it is equal to sowing seed that will bring a harvest.
    If you have prayed and ind yourself waiting longer than you had planned for an answer, thank God that He is working when you are tempted to be impatient. Tell God what you are expecting and look forward to your breakthrough. Don’t fall into the trap of complaining and murmuring while you wait either. Be joyfully confident that your answer is on the way.

    i just came across your blog from a friend of mine heather and want you to know only Gods knows what time you have….My daughter in law has been fighting cancer for 6 years and she is only 20, the drs told her when it begin she only had a year at most, well she is still here and fighting and lives life to the fullest everyday. the drs say they cant explain why she is still alive……we can….God is good and faithful and only he knows our future…

    Hi Lindy! You may not know who I am but I have read your blog and have been praying.
    I just wanted to let you know that we happen to be heading to Mayo Clinic tomorrow morning for my husband who has heart issues. If there is ANYTHING that we can do to assist you (or if you want to hop in the car with us you GLADLY may!!) please let me know.
    I can’t speak enough about Mayo Clinic and what they have done for us. I highly recommend going there. We were there back in May as well and were going to use Wings of Mercy but things changed. That is a great way to get there. They are wonderful people, all you have to do is call them and they set it all up.
    Again please let me know if we can do anything. Continually praying!!

    I just want to let you know that I and many of my friends a and family are praying for you guys.

    My mom (Marcia Ebels) is currently trying to find the name of a physician who is a highly recommended brain surgeon at Mayo.

    Also, I am in the process of finding a job and I should be in Zeeland through August. If you ever need anyone to watch your kids during doctor visits etc. don’t hesitate to contact me, I would love to give my time(for free)and help out!

She received such wonderful care and treatment…the best. My uncle has connections to a private jet that may be of help to you. He is in Alaska right now, but I may have connections to maybe help you get to Mayo if you haven’t already received it.     I am so sorry to hear this news. I have just caught up with your situation on your blog. I have been through breast cancer and just recently had a spinal tumor removed. I doctor at Mayo clinic and love it there. I have a super oncologist there….Dr. Moynihan. There are great surgeons there as well. My radiation oncologist is Dr. Laack. Call 1-800-660-4582 (patient account services)and they should be able to get you to who you need to see.     I do not know you, nor you I but I want you to know that I have said a prayer for your family today. God took my mother home almost 20 years ago, I was 10, and I remember those last days like they were yesterday. I have missed her so very much through the years but I wanted you to know that God has been ever so faithful. My father was left to raise 5 children between the ages of 14 and 5. I have seen God’s people come together to support and encourage us as a family and I know he will do the same for you.     Lindy and Dusty, we are praying for you almost continually in our hearts for you guys. We pray like Jessica’s devotional states…expectantly. God has taught us to pray and expect so that is what we are doing. We cry at the road that you have to take because it is not easy but you know from previous experiences too what it means to expect while you pray and God has been faithful.

    Lindy, you asked for prayers about someone who can fly and if anyone knows someone. Steve’s old partner in business years ago flew a lot and even partnered in building the airport in Vriesland. Have you heard anything yet from anyone else because we would love to contact him to see his flying status. Let us know.

    Lindy and Dusty, I know you know but as you walk through this sometimes you don’t even know how to pray for yourselves and you are too wiery to pray. It is so clear from your blog and from facebook that there are so many people praying on your behalf. Thanks for keeping us posted and for your honesty so that we as the body of Christ can know how to pray for you…fervently. Praying for peace and rest for you right now.

    My heart is just absolutely breaking for you, and your family!! I am not sure what to say here that hasn’t already been said, or something that could possibly make this situation any better. But I can tell you this, we love you both so much, and will pray for you, always! You couldn’t ask for a better Doctor than Dr. Vanderwoude! She is great!     Just tonight, we were at my nephew’s 1st birthday party when I found out the devastating news, and I just stepped outside, alone, to let this all sink in, and to say a prayer for you. And then on the way home, we had 91.3 WCSG on the radio, and I heard a really neat song!It is called “Waiting Room” by Jonny Diaz. Here are some of the lyrics, that I thought were just so fitting. 🙂

Tears rolled down my face as I read your most recent updates. It was just over a year ago when we e-mailed and swapped stories about the surgeries and reconstruction.     Scott and I join the incredible army of prayer warriors who are storming the gates of heaven on your behalf tonight. We would highly recommend the Mayo Clinic. Scott received amazing care and treatment there….in the end, I really wish I had gone there! Everything is SO efficient (testing, doctor visits, etc.) and SO cutting-edge. This is where I would want any loved-one treated.

    I read this yesterday morning, but was in tears trying to think of anything I could say and there was nothing. Really…I was just mad. I know God has a wonderful plan for you and you are so very special to Him, but it’s so hard to know why you’ve been through so much…it’s hard to even believe this is really happening. I haven’t stopped thinking about you since Friday morning…you are on my mind constantly and every time I think of you, I pray for a miracle! I know it’s possible with God, but I just need to really believe it!     Ok, so Nehemiah 8:10 came to mind, but when I opened my Bible to find where that verse actually was, I opened my Bible up right to Lamentations and these verses were highlighted, dated 3/5/05…

    “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him…” Lamentations 3:22-25

    I pray that brings some encouragement to you today…the part that really hits me is the beginning because I’m sure this terrible news can consume you, but our great God will not allow that. I pray that tendency to be consumed by it is replaced with a peace that only He can give…which I know you’ve already felt and for which I’m so thankful for!

    Heard about your situation through FB. My heart breaks for you and my prayers are being lifted up on your behalf. Your blog asked for suggestions for treatment centers. The first thought that came to mind was Cancer Treatment Centers of America. There is one located near Chicago. I’ve seen their ads and evangelist James Robison had a daughter that went to the Tulsa location of C.T.C.o.A. and she is now cancer free. I pray for peace for you, Dusty, and the kids. Also for wisdom in deciding the best treatment plan for you.
