Cancer, cancer and more cancer

posted by:
Lindy

Dr. Housekamp, the surgeon who performed the lymph node biospy and Power Port surgery, called this morning.  He said it was a difficult lymph node surgery because the lymph nodes were really hard to get to.  He did a lot of digging because they were quite deep.  He removed six lymph nodes and two of them came back with cancer.   They were hoping to do a MAC sedation which makes you kind of out of it and you won’t really remember it, but half way through the procedure they had to do a general.  I’ll spare you all the technical information, but they did a good thing by knocking me out completely.  Thankfully my throat doesn’t hurt from the breathing tube and I had no side effects from that.

Dr. Housekamp (surgeon) is going to talk to Dr. VanderWoude (oncologist) about what the next steps are.  He said she may want to do a PET scan to see if the cancer has spread anywhere else (I thought that’s what the CAT scans were for, but what do I know).  He also said she may want to do radiation in my armpit after chemo.  We will wait and see.

Dr. VanderWoude hasn’t staged the cancer yet because she was waiting for the lymph node biopsy results.  Once I know what stage the cancer is I will pass it along to you.

Please pray that I will not lose my fighting spirit.  When I receive news like I did today about the lymph nodes, I find myself wanting to throw up my hands and have a big ol’ pity party for myself.  Everything I do takes energy.  I can choose to use the energy to fight rather than feel sorry for myself.

God will help me beat this.  We’re going to fight together and win.  He’s got my back.  My God makes the sun rise and fall.  He is huge.  He is larger and more powerful than we can imagine.  He can move mountains.  He saved my little girl.  He can save me too.  Just believe it.

When you don’t have the strength or the energy to pray…. remember that so many of us are praying for you! You WILL get through this and you are a tough girl!!! You will win this fight!!!

Lindy- All our love and prayers are with you and your family ever minute…God is so good and He will carry you through this!

My heart goes out to you and Dusty and the kids. It’s been a long time since I last saw you (getting a pedicure I think:) but you are not far away at all in everyone’s thoughts and prayers. There’s a big community of support out here for you and your family to help get through this newest twist in life. You have such a kind and generous spirit, try and not let the worry take that over. You never really know what you are capable of until it’s put to the test and this is a real doozy. Like you haven’t already had your fair share I know! But just think about all of the other’s before you that have been down this path and are now completely healed, you will be part of that success story once this is all said and done. Look at what a miracle has already happened through baby Sam, I think the old saying “like mother, like daugher” really applies here! You two sure are going to be a force to be reckoned with, there is some serious girl power going on in your family:)

  5. Andrew and Julie DeGroot says:

Hi Lindy- You don’t know us…we go to church with Nelson and Julie Meyers. But I just wanted you and your family too know that we are all praying for you! I check your blog everyday and you are trully a woman of God and like the verse says: God has plans for you!! God is so good and just keep fighting. God will bless you.

  6. Rachel Baird says:

I am praying this for you today ~
Isaiah 40:29 – He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

  7. Wendie Freriks says:

We are pulling for you. You will win this fight with all you have! God is good, All the time!

  8. Jill says:

So I am getting ready for work..thinking about you as always and this song comes on the radio. I know you know it…Sing it loud girl.

    Everything rides on hope now
    Everything rides on faith somehow
When the world has broken me down
    Your love sets me free

When my life is like a storm
Rising waters all I want is the shore
You say I’ll be ok and
    Make it through the rain
You are my shelter from the storm

    I’m not my own
    I’ve been carried by You
    All my life

  9. Jana says:

“Do not be anxious abut anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6-7
Give it all to the Lord, Lindy and Dusty! He has you wrapped in His loving and healing arms.
    Love,
    Jana

Oh Lindy…I’m praying for you all the time… In fact, I was just praying for you on my lunch and I thanked God that he knows us and what we need even better than we know ourselves. I was of course thinking specifically of you, and then thinking about little Brooklyn and how she deals with this all too. And then Dusty…I can’t imagine watching my spouse go through the pain…not only physically, but emotionally too. But, you are going to beat this! As you remind your own self, God has delivered you from your own major trials just recently…He will get you through this too. Oh Lindy…I’m sending you a very big hug right now…hang in there and we won’t lose hope either!!

Hi Lindy, that was me, your cousin Julie, that just posted the anonymous reply… Just wanted you to know it was from me…I tried logging in but it wouldn’t let me, no biggie.

  12. Aunt Shirley says:

Hi honey, I read your blog-my heart hurts. I KNOW that you are a survivor, keep up your positive spirit and our hope together is in God – Trust His Heart. I will NEVER leave you – that is one of His promises and you can claim that as His child.
Love you, Dusty and the children.

  13. Michelle says:

Lindy, I am so sorry to hear the news, my heart goes out to you and Dusty. I can’t imagine the strength it must take to stay positive, but you are amazing!
Praying that God will surround you with peace.

  14. Rachel says:

Lindy, you are an amazing woman. I want the kind of faith, and courage that you have.
I remember standing over little samantha in the NICU begging God to heal her tiny body… not thinking that there was any hope for her…. God completely healed your little girl! He is going to do the same for you. Hold tight to him, and to his promises. He will get you through.

  15. Amy & Brent Sluiter says:

Lindy… so sorry to hear this news! I again ask God “why???” Like I shared with you before and we read last night when our small group met to pray for you guys: “I know that my Redeemer lives and that in the end He will stand upon the earth.” (Job 19:25). But we KNOW God is bigger than this and we BELIEVE that He WILL heal you.Your faith is amazing; you really are an inspiration! Thank you for allowing us to walk this journey with you. We will be praying like never before; believing God for another miracle. Love you guys!

  16. Lindy-
No tears…Just smiles! You can do this. I am not sure what God has planned for you. But it has to be amazing. I will be praying boldly that God will heal you just as we did for Samantha. I know this will not be easy I wish it was, We are all be hind you every step of the way.

  17. Jana Zuidema says:

    Lindy,

I am unable to access the schedules, but if you ever need a ride to an appt. I am available. Brooklyn is welcome to come over and play as well. I am not exactly a baby person, but if you run stuck in that dept. I could do it.
    Praying for you!

  18. Julie Meyaard says:

I am so angry right now…angry that you found out bad news today…angry that my Mom is fighting the hardest battle of her life. But thankful too that we serve a mighty God who has us all in his hand and has this all figured out. Oh Lindy, you are so amazing…so precious to so many people. Thank you for sharing with us. Thank you for allowing us to fall on our knees for you. As much as it hurts it also feels great to be broken. We will never be the same.
    Love you guys,

  19. Dear Lindy,
In reading your post today I was brought back to something my Dad said awhile ago… “Nothing is incurable or impossible with God. For the One who created the universe, healing someone from cancer is no big deal”. Praise God for your faith, it will protect you when you feel most vulnerable. He is here, right now and always.
    Prayers, Susan

  20. Liz TenCate says:

    Dear Lindy,

I was so SORRY to hear of your news! But with God ALL things are possible and you saw that with Samantha, and God will heal you too! We will pray boldly and with expectancy every day!
God loves you and so do we!
    In Him,
    Dave and Liz TenCate

  21. Vicki & Doug Zylstra says:

    Lindy and Dusty,
You and your family are in our prayers daily…hourly. We will pray fervently on your behalf! You are an amazing, strong women. We know that your strenght is not your own right now, but it comes from our Father. You know that God is the almighty healer and we anxiously wait for him to heal you, as he so clearly saved Samantha, so that we can once again praise Him for His healing power. Stay strong!

  22. Aunt Carole says:

Dear Dusty & Lindy & Family,
This is not the news we wanted to hear, but hold on to your faith that God knew it was coming, and He’s already got the game plan going. It may be another bump in the road, but it’s not a bump that can’t be overcome. Just remember that God is going ahead of you with open arms to carry you – keep you focus on Him and not on the cancer. And if you feel weak along the way from time to time, it’s O.K.- we’re all here to be strong for you and your family. Your faith and strength has helped us when we want to fall down on your behalf and cry, so I hope you know that we will be there for you when you need to fall down and just let it out. It’s O.K. – when Jesus wept, He showed us how to grieve our losses. But just don’t ever forget that even though we may loose a battle or two along the way, the victory is still ours to claim through the resurrection power of our Lord! We love you guys, and our prayers are as constant as our breathe.

  23. barb says:

Lindy…Just as Brooke sat at your bedside…watched over you…and stayed near….Jesus is. Just as your mom and dad meet your needs in their special way..Jesus will. I picture Him holding you and never letting go. Praying. In His Grip.barb

  24. Mary VerBeek says:

    Hi Aunt Lindy!
I just wanted to let you know that I think and pray for you often. I am a firm believer in prayer and I know that there are many many people praying for you. Never forget that God is by your side and that He will heal you! The following prayer gives me comfort in hard times…

    Lord,
Help me to remember that nothing will happen to me today that you and I together cannot handle.

    Love you Aunt Lindy!
    ~Mary

  25. Aunt Carole says:

    Good Morning, Dusty & Lindy,
I woke up this morning by a little bird (a cardinal, I think) just singing its heart out-on and on it went. One of my thoughts was, “How can you sing so beautifully – don’t you know about the pain in the world? Don’t you know Lindy has cancer?” The song that came back to me said, “I don’t know about Lindy’s cancer, but the Lord does-the same Lord that gives me this song to sing is watching over her. Her life may have changed, but our Lord never does.” And don’t we know it. He is still ever faithful, ever watching, ever loving, and ever healing. I hope your family has a more encouraging day today. Yes, two lymph nodes had cancer, but don’t forget about the four that didn’t! You’ve come a long ways already: body scans, heart test, lymph node surgery, port put in,… Stay strong, child of God, in His strength and courage. Love & Prayers always…

  26. Julie Mo says:

Wishing you good things for the weekend – Lindy. You can beat this one day at a time. I’ll continue to pray for all of you.

  27. Good morning Guys- Praying for you through out the day. May you find comfort today and Gods hand.

  28. Julie Meyers says:

ditto to what Aunt Carole said!!

  29. Mary Rademaker says:

    Dear Lindy,
Love and prayers from Jim,Kerri and myself. You have been on my mind and in my prayers since the very beginning when Jana gave me the news about your cancer. I thank God for a friend like her who has the heart and compassion to reach out on behalf of her beloved family, knowing for sure that prayers would be lifted up. So,within my extended family you have churches in Holland, Saugatuck, Grand Haven, North Carolina and Florida all praying for a special young woman, named Lindy VerBeek!! 🙂
I wish I had the magic words to make everything better, but there is one thing that sticks in my mind—-I know God has you in the palm of His hand at ALL times and I know that He is using you as a vessel of encouragement and comfort to someone else who will going through the same painful journey as you and WHEN you are healed, you can be there for others!!! You go girl, do not lose your fighting spirit because that spirit will someday be shown to someone God has lead you to!! Watch and wait!!

  30. Anita says:

    Hey Lindy,
We are praying for you each day/night, everytime we think of you. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us so we can pray specifically for each of your needs, fears, concerns, and hopefully soon, your answered prayers. Elijah and Faith are praying for you every night, just like they did for Samantha and I know God is listening, just as He hears all of us knocking on His door and asking for your healing. We won’t stop knocking on His door Lindy and when you are too weak to knock, you can bet we are all making a thunderous noise on your behalf!!!

  31. Sande says:

Dusty and Lindy ~ You guys are in my thoughts and prayers almost constantly these days. Wish I could come and scoop all five of you up in a giant hug. Lindy – your faith and courage are inspiring. Thank you for blogging. When I pray, I see all of you in the palm of God’s big strong loving healing hand.
