I hate cancer. It’s dumb.

I saw Dr. VanderWoude (oncologist) this morning.  I’m happy and thankful to say the tumor is shrinking!  She was pleased with how much smaller it is today than the last two visits.  It makes suffering through chemo worth it.  I was hoping this meant I would only have one more round of A/C.  No luck.  She reminded me that the four rounds following A/C aren’t as bad.  She said in a month I will feel better than what I do now.  I can’t wait to rejoin society.  🙂

Speaking of chemo, I have another round tomorrow.  I hate what it does to me.  We have to laugh because in addition to making me sick, it makes me very confused.  I can’t remember conversations.  I can’t process the simplest things.  I feel so disconnected and foggy.  It’s very strange.

DISCLAIMER:  If I have a conversation with you between tomorrow and next Wednesday I may not remember what we talked about.  Please accept my apologies in advance.  🙂

Lately Brooklyn has been testing words to see if they’re “naughty words”.  Her latest words are hate and dumb.  I can tell if she’s about to test a word by how she approaches me.  Yesterday she came up to me, cocked her head to the side, scrunched her nose and said “mom?” (uh-oh naughty word is coming).  “I hate cancer.  It’s dumb.”  I laughed.  I hate it too.  Then I explained how hate is a strong word and dumb isn’t nice…blah…blah…blah

I meet with the radiation oncologist tomorrow, Dr. Edlund.  I think he’s going to tell me if I need radiation before surgery, after surgery or both.  I’ll let you know.

So my tumor is shrinking.  Chemo is working.  A week of misery is coming.  My strength and endurance come only from God.  There is no other explanation for how I’m getting through this.

He is using you to help me too.  Thank you for your prayers and communication.  Please keep them coming because they keep me going.

Wonderful news! I think that I spotted you in Meijer this morning (maybe after your appt.?) I was trying to go thru the “self-check” with my two “helpers” when I saw you. Your head wrap is too cute!! I’ll pray for extra strength tomorrow for that next round of dumb chemo (thank Brooklyn for the adjective). Thanks for sharing the good news of your shrinking tumor.

  4. Rachel Baird says:

I love Brooklyn. 🙂 I hate cancer, too.

That is such wonderful news!!! I am so happy the chemo is doing its job… I LOVE hearing good news:) I am laughing to myself as I read what you said about being forgetful, at least you have an excuse! For me its just plain old age! Seriously though, we will continue to pray that each chemo treatment works better than the last and that you have less side effects from it!

  6. Maryann Rondeau says:

I do have to agree with Brooklyn, cancer is dumb! Praying that your sickness is eased this next round of chemo and that the tumor keeps shrinking.

  7. Stacy Wiersma says:

    Yep, cancer is dumb!!
What wonderful news, the tumor shrinking! I hope that knowing that makes the next round of chemo a little more tolerable.
    Stay strong, your doing great!

  8. Holly says:

I agree, cancer is dumb! And i would let Brooklyn use that word if she was talking about Cancer!
Thank you for sharing your heart. I dread this week for you….wish one of us could take it for a week so you could have a break. BUT it is working so that makes it 1% worth it!
See you tomorrow…..take care! Go have ice cream tonight or something!

  9. kathy says:

Yea to the shrinking tumor! Yea to God! I’ll do another victory dance (in private).

  10. Jana Ver Beek says:

Brooklyn is wise beyond her years…..working in pathology for the past 26 years, I’ve often thought how “stupid” cancer is. I know that is one of Brooklyn’s “bad” words too and quite frankly, I agree with Holly, she should be allowed to say that word when referring to the big “C”.
I’ll see you tomorrow. Be strong and be courageous!
    Love, Jana

    Lindy –
Lots of prayers and love from Montana! We were just vacationing in Yellowstone with the Verbeeks, and we were surrounded by God’s beautiful unique creations …majestic mountains, bubbling brooks, running bison, (oops almost forgot…screaming kids), and we thought of God’s amazing creation of YOU. Your amazing strength and faith in God has helped all of us grow in our walk with God. You have taught all of us that Faith isn’t faith until it’s all your holding on to. We miss you guys and will continue to pray for complete healing! Lots of Love and Hugs…Scott, Lisa, Jena, Sami, and Tristan Swanson

  14. Julie Mo says:

Shrink tumor Shrink – so happy to hear the chemo is doing its job ( even though it sucks). Keep your chin up and I will keep praying for continued shrinkage and complete healing.

  15. Tina Amaya says:

Lindy – What wonderful news. Somehow we need to pray that God will allow the “forgetfulness” to apply to all of the bad side affects of the chemo… and that in the end that memory will be the furthest from your mind. Continuing to pray for you as you walk this journey. Dusty and the kids too! Tina

  16. Christy VanKoevering says:

That’s great news to hear that the tumor is shrinking! But I know you still have a lot more to go through, but we’ll keep positive! “This too shall pass” the Lord has a plan and we will trust him!

  17. Aunt Kathy says:

    Hi Lindy;
Today is Friday and wondering how your day and night were and praying that this round was not as rough for you! Sounds like you have an awsome team of docs. working as team, and I don’t know about you, but having a plan helps me stay focused and anticipate each step thats achieved-in other words “mark that one off and on to the next…”
About that dear sweet Brooklyn-what a sweet little angel, thumbs up for saying what we all feel in the simplest of ways!
Hugs to Sam, Max and Brooklyn
(Do you know when your surgery is scheduled for?)
